How Google Matches Up Adwords Advertisers With Websites Displaying Adsense

Introduction to Adwords and Adsense

Google Adwords and Adsense are two sides of the same coin. They work hand in hand to deliver targeted ads to prospective customers and create revenue for advertisers, website owners, and of course - Google.

Adwords is a targeted ad system offered by Google to advertisers. Advertisers submit a list of keywords or phrases for their ads, which triggers them to be shown on a website or in Google’s search engine results pages (SERPs). Advertisers pay Google for each click the ads generate.

Adsense, on the other hand, is an ad serving program that allows website owners to unobtrusively display relevant text, image and, more recently, video advertisements on their sites. It is also a way for website owners to add Google search in their websites and to earn money by displaying ads on the search results pages. The ads posted on each site are administered by Google and creates revenue for the website owner. Although website owners need not pay to join the program they still get paid for each click received by the ads shown on their site or for the every thousand times a specific ad appears on the website. This is why AdSense is called a pay-per-click and pay-per-impression program.

Keyword Targeting and Site-Targeted Advertising

As mentioned earlier, Adwords and Adsense are two sides of the same coin. For both programs to work they need the other. Adsense affiliates need the data provided by Adwords advertisers to be able to display relevant ads in their websites. But how does Google know which ads are relevant? How does Google match the ads to the websites?

In their Adsense FAQ, Google answered the question. According to Google they use Google search and page-ranking technologies to deliver the ads to the websites. Google matches advertisers and websites using two different techniques – keyword targeting and site-targeted advertising. The choice as to which technique will be used in the matching process is up to the advertiser.

Keyword Targeting

Keyword targeting uses keywords or key phrases to match the ads to websites. Google compares the keywords to the content in a website and decides whether the ads will be relevant the site’s visitors. However, Google matches the ads to the websites not only using the simple keyword matching described above but also using a complicated algorithm that factors in keyword analysis, word frequency, font size, and the overall link structure of the web. What that algorithm is, of course Google will not tell.

Site-targeted Advertising

Site-targeted advertising is an option Google offers to its advertisers. In site-targeted advertising advertisers are allowed to pick the sites that they want their ads to appear in. This site-targeted advertising option is beneficial for advertisers who know their target audience and the sites they regularly visit. This option does not use the complicated algorithm used in keyword matching. Instead it simply matches the ads to the websites as requested by the advertisers in a straightforward manner. This option is just as effective as the keyword matching option if the advertiser was able to choose the best sites for them to appear. Best being sites whose majority of visitors belongs to the advertisers’ target audience.

The Need for More Websites as Advertising Hosts

Adsense and other targeted advertising systems have proven to be very effective and are so popular nowadays that there is a need for more available advertising spots in websites accommodate the number of Adwords advertisers. There are many websites out there willing to profit from ads but since Google is after quality and relevance, not just any site will. There is a need for good web pages to serve as advertising host. A good web page means that the web page has rich content and also has a lot of traffic or visitors. Even if a website has good content but generates little traffic it would not be a good advertising host since the ads will be seen only by a few. A website with lots of traffic but crappy or questionable content is also not to Google’s taste since they have standards to maintain to ensure quality. Quality websites like that which is still not Adsense affiliates are getting increasingly hard to find. Because of this, Google came up with a new method that will aid in the discovery of such sites. The new method will then be used by Google to help them present new quality sites to their Adword advertisers who want the option of site-targeted advertising.

Google’s New Method

Last May 4, 2006 a new patent filed by Google entitled Determining prospective advertising hosts using data such as crawled documents and document access statistics (US Patent Application 20060095322) was published. The patent listed Timothy Matthew Dierks as inventor. The patent describes the new method that Google will use, or most probably is using already, to help discover new websites and web pages that can serve as advertising hosts for their Adwords ads. The method will be used for three basic purposes as summarized by William Slawski on his article Google on Improving Adsense/Adwords. The three basic uses are:

1. Accepting websites as advertising sites/hosts
2. Scoring the web pages in terms of expected page views and ad revenue per page view
3. Sorting the documents based on their scores

After sorting the documents based on their scores the viable web pages will then be presented to advertisers for their consideration. Websites and/or pages chosen by the advertisers will then be used as their ads host.

Some of the information that will be presented by Google about the web pages to help advertisers make their choice are:

1. Features of the web page
2. Content on the web page
3. Information about the web page (i.e. host)
4. Importance or quality of a web page
5. Characteristics of the web pages’ visitors
6. Absolute position of the ad in the web page and its position relative to the other ads on the page
7. Absolute size of the ad and its size relative to the other ads
8. The ad’s color
9. The number of other ads that will be running on the page
10. The types of other ads that will run on the page
11. Time of the day, week, and year the ad will be served…and more.

3 Reasons Why Adsense Is Essential For Content Sites

If you really think about it, the concept is quite easy to comprehend. A java script is inserted into a certain website by the publisher or the webmaster. Webmasters are given the chance to choose from many different types of text ad formats to better complement their website and fit their webpage layout.

There is also a possibility of more than one click through when the visitor is not aware of what they are actually clicking on. It may also appeal to the people visiting and they may take the next step of finding out more information. This way the people behind the Adsense will get their content read and making profit in the process.

Reason number two is that Adsense publishers can track not only how their sites are progressing but also the earnings based on the webmaster-defined channels. The recent improvements in the search engines gives webmasters the ability to observe how their ads are performing using customizable reports that has the capacity to detail page impressions, clicks and click-through rates. Webmasters and publishers can now track specific ad formats, colors and pages within a website. Trends are also easily spotted.

Because of real-time reporting, the efficiency of any alterations can be assessed quickly. It will be apparent what people are making the most clicks on, therefore allowing the webmasters the ability to meet the changing demands while generating cash. Webmasters are also able to group web pages by URL, domain, ad type or category, which will provide them some accurate insight on which pages, ads and domains are performing best.

The third and final reason is that the advertisers have realized the benefits associated having their ads served on targeted websites. Five tips on making big money using adsense

From the beginning of the Adsense program people have tried to get the most out of they're Adsense Account.

Here are a view tips on how to maximise your profit.

1. Place your adsense blocks in the hot spots of your site. Those hot spots are in the top of the page, the left or the right side and in the center of the page. If will place an adsense in the footer of a website that has a lot of content you can just figure it out for yourself that people will get rarely to that ad.

2. The colors of the adsense links must have the same colors of your site's links.

3. Don't make your site's background color a dark one. People won't be able to read the content very good and won't see the adsense links that well either. Keep your background color white. You can't go wrong with that.

4. Make your adsense blocks blend with the content. As long as you make people think the adsense links are part of your site they'll keep clicking those ads and make you the money.
Put the ads exactly below your top menu and make it look like it shows some submenus.
You can also put it in the center of your site right next to your site's content. That way people will think those links are related to the content and will click on them.

5. Another trick I've seen that it's starting to catch up is putting some small images on top of your adsense links. The eyes of the visitors are more attracted to the images than the text sow you get them to look at the ads in a short time. They'll think the links have relevancy with the images and once again they'll click on them.

Using Blogs For Affilate And Adsense Profits Combined by Chris Taylor

How do you set up a blog for effective affilate and Adsense profits?

Here is the low down of how it's done and some of the in's and outs of rss.

For this example I will use web hosting as the affilate product we selling on the blog.

Two links underneath, one going to reviews and the other to "why our reviews are more relaible than other sites" 4. Reviews of your products.

4 to 10 reviews, make them long and give info of what benefits one product has over the other and a rating for different aspects. Do not put adsense on your reviews page.

This site does it really well - and it's a blog to boot.

5. Next heading in the sidebar - "Articles"

A link going to current articles followed by a search box for your articles. Each article page is where you Adsense sits and here are some good tips...

And then if for any reason you have a bad Adsense month, the affilate income is there as a backup.

The Death of Google Adsense And Other Myths by Titus Hoskins

Recent changes in the Google Adsense program has many online website owners and marketers seriously concerned. Many have seen their Adsense profits and income flatline... seen their four or five figure monthly Adsense income disappear overnight. For many the Google Adsense bubble has burst.

What happened?

First, Google made a change in its Adsense program, letting advertisers choose between putting their ads in the search results or on the content pages of Adsense publishers. Search won out and started to receive the higher bids. Search results convert better than content ads.

Next, Google has cracked down on Junk Adsense sites, like they should. These sites consisted mainly of software generated re-hashed search engine links and were totally annoying to say the least. But Google also cracked down on 'squeeze pages' or 'affiliate landing pages' - a lucrative source of income for many online marketers, mainly because these pages helped marketers build an opt-in list or use permission based email.

The results of these changes produced an Adsense meltdown for many online marketers.

Some Internet marketers are speculating recent changes could even mean the death of Adsense. One online marketer, Scott Boulch even published a free report entitled 'The Death of Adsense".

Many affiliate marketers would agree with Boulch on many of his points, especially the obvious fact that using Adsense on your web content is starting on the bottom rung of the online marketing ladder. Instead of receiving pennies per click with Adsense, alert marketers and webmasters have already discovered that by using CPA (Cost-Per-Action) and direct affiliate links, they can produce significantly more revenue from their web pages. Why earn pennies per click when you can earn $5, $10 or OVER $100 per click?

But the fine people at Google are catching on...

In the past Google has made its own swing to the Cost-Per-Action direction with its referral system for the Firefox Browser and giving webmasters credit for signing up Adwords and Adsense accounts.

Many online marketers believe Google needs to expand on these baby steps and open their Adsense affiliate program up to third party products/advertisers. In a recent company statement Google offered some hope: "We're always looking for new ways to provide effective and useful features to advertisers, publishers, and users," the company stated "As part of these efforts we are currently testing a cost-per-action (CPA) pricing model to give advertisers more flexibility and provide publishers another way to earn revenue through AdSense." Basically, in cost-per-action, advertisers pay for leads, purchases or customer acquisition. It would help with the click fraud issue and the monetary returns could potentially make Adsense's revenues pale in comparison.

As more and more commerce goes online... acquiring customers for such diverse services as insurance, real estate, telephone, marketing, web hosting, travel, mortgage loans, cable TV, banking... you name it, almost any service or product sold in the marketplace is now turning to the Internet for customers and lifelong clients.

Enormous sums of money will change hands. Perhaps, the most lucrative of these is customer acquisition. Advertisers are turning to the Internet and webmasters/marketers for acquiring these lifelong customers for their respective services and products. Businesses and companies are quickly realizing paying an attractive lead generating fee/commission is smart business. They quickly build a client base for their services or products and quickly recoup their expenses - realizing in the long run these leads will generate huge profits.

It can also mean huge profits for the CPA networks like ValueClick's Commission Junction and Rakuten's LinkShare who supply the advertisers with publishers and website marketers to harvest these leads. It can be a lucrative venture for all involved, especially for those online marketers who have cornered the search engines for lucrative niche markets in big ticket items. Even small ticket items pay quite well for those marketers who know how to market online.

Contextual advertising is fine, but CPA (Cost-Per-Action) will offer much better returns for the website owner. Making any profitable site much more profitable. It will and is opening up a whole area of marketing opportunities that never existed before we had the Internet. Creating a complex structure of advertisers, publishers and the Affiliate/CPA companies that connect the two.

Of course, cutting out the middle man has always been even a more profitable venture for most marketers. As more and more webmasters realize they can make much more with dealing directly with companies, rather than going through a middle process like Google Adsense or the countless other affiliate/CPA networks ... online marketers can reap even bigger rewards.

For an online marketer when you get a phone call or email from the CEO or the affiliate manager with a company or service you're promoting with your website - you know you have made it! Dealing directly with a company usually means bigger commissions and special exclusive deals just for you or your sites.

Only fly in the ointment, all that extra paperwork and business wheeling and dealing. Many marketers and website owners like the idea of someone else handling all the tracking, collecting payments, promotional materials... they just like to sit back and build more websites and content. It gives the affiliate marketer a lifestyle that they are looking for on the web. They just like to market and promote with their sites and let someone else worry about the details. Therefore, there will always be a place for contextual ads like Google Adsense... Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated...

However, could CPA be a better alternative for the current Adsense contextual ads?

Google would be the natural choice for a middleman if there ever was one. Besides, many savvy marketers know the Google brand name is trusted online, any product/service promoted through Google would be an easy sell. Many argue Google already dominates the web, why should it not be the one to handle these CPA transactions through its Adsense program.

On the flip side, over countless updates and changes to its indexing, many webmasters have experienced more than a few negative dealings with Google. Many have won, many have lost in this Google Age, but all have realized riding the Google Search Engine is like running with the bulls at Pamplona, totally thrilling unless you're one of the unfortunate few who get trampled in the process.
